BIA Secretarial Election for Tribal Constitutional Amendment – Ballots Due to BIA No Later Than May 10, 2019

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS ELECTION IS DIFFERENT THAN THE TRIBE’S ELECTION AND THE BIA DIRECTLY HANDLES THIS ELECTION, NOT THE TRIBAL ELECTION BOARD.

In 2018, a Petition was filed by some Tribal Members with the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) to request that the BIA hold a Secretarial Election to amend the Constitution of the San Juan Southern Paiute Tribe. The requested amendment would allow all Tribal Members 18 year of age or older to participate in Tribal elections regardless of where they live. Currently, only Tribal Members living within 150 miles of the Tribe’s territory are eligible to vote.

All Tribal Members who will be 18 years of age or older on May 10, 2019 should have received a Secretarial Election Notice dated March 6, 2019 in the mail. The Secretarial Election requires that Tribal Members register to vote by April 3, 2018 in order to cast a ballot in the Secretarial Election. All ballots for registered voters must be received by the BIA no later than 12:00 p.m. MST on May 10, 2019.

Please read the attached BIA Secretarial Election Notice for additional information about this election.
