San Juan Southern Paiute Tribe Health Department | Alcohol & Substance Abuse Program

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and the Health Department is dedicating the whole month to gatherings, movement, cultural practice, and community connection. Mental health is just as essential as physical health. That truth sits at the center of everything we are offering this May.

All events are hosted by the San Juan Southern Paiute Tribe Health Department at 67 NW Maple Street, Tuba City, Arizona, unless noted otherwise. Tribal members of all ages are welcome. Bring a relative. Bring a friend. Bring yourself as you are.

May 1 — Wellness Trip to Page, AZ | 10:00 AM

Emotional Wellness Conference: "Grow Through What You Go Through"

We are kicking the month off on the road. This conference underscores how central mental well-being is to everyday life and reinforces that mental health deserves the same attention we give physical health. Space is limited. Contact Virginia to reserve your seat.

May 7 — Community Talking Circle | 10:00 AM

Mother's Day Celebration

A space to reflect on what strength means, as individuals and as a community. We will honor the mothers, grandmothers, aunties, and women who carry us. Talking Circle is a place to be heard without judgment, to build resilience, and to strengthen the relationships that keep us well.

May 14 — Women's Group | 10:00 AM

Creative Expression: Art, Music, and Fun

An afternoon for the women of the community to gather, create, and connect. No art experience needed. Bring your hands and your heart.

May 21 — Health Education | 9:00 AM

Mindfulness Meditation and Chair Exercises with NNSDP

Partnering with the Navajo Nation Special Diabetes Program, this session pairs gentle mindfulness practice with chair-based movement. Accessible for all mobility levels. Leave feeling calmer and stronger than when you walked in.

May 26 — Just Move It at Hidden Springs | 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM

Community fitness and fellowship outdoors at Hidden Springs. Walk, move, visit with neighbors. Family friendly.

May 28 — Cooking Demonstration | 9:00 AM

Cultural Food Demonstration with NNSDP: Juniper Ash Preparation and Blue Corn Mush

A hands-on return to traditional food knowledge. Juniper ash and blue corn mush are foundational to our plates and to our health. Come learn, taste, and take the practice home.

Why This Month Matters

Grief, anxiety, stress, and addiction are not signs of weakness. They are signs that something in us is asking to be heard. Our ancestors gathered in circle. They ate together. They moved together. They prayed and laughed and cried together. That is the medicine this month is built on.

If you or someone in your family is struggling, please reach out. You are not alone.
